ROWAN OF THE WOODS
STUDY ON MULTIFAITH SPACES
This project invites a new conception of (multi-)faith worship spaces through the lens of lighting. Since the 1950’s, multi-faith worship spaces have been increasingly implemented in universities, airports, hospitals, and other public institutions around the world. Within the context of super-diverse cities such as London, there has been a noticeable increase in the plurality of religious and cultural practices over the past decades. However, on many occasions, multi-faith spaces are provided by public administrators, and there is a lacking design element.
This project finalised with the idea of creating a space (in this case, from an office room that does not have a faith space) which can adapt to various religions through minimal material intervention, and utilising light as the main tool. Light is therefore used to transform the room to adapt to the user through projectors, and the installation of delicate cotton fabric around the room allows for the user to be completely immersed in a new setting.
